Big relief for Yeddyurappa: Court acquits BSY in Rs 40 crore bribery case
CBI court stated that it found no evidence to convict Yeddyurappa in the Rs 40 crore bribery case.
Bengaluru, Oct 26: The Special CBI court on Wednesday acquitted BS Yeddyurappa in connection to the Rs 40 crore bribery case. A clean chit was also given to his sons, B Y Raghavendra, Vijendra, his son-in-law, Sohan Kumar and others.
In all, there were 13 accused in the case. The court observed that it found no evidence to convict Yeddyurappa and others in the case. The CBI is likely to go in appeal against this verdict.
Yeddyurappa looked relieved and he broke into a smile as the court acquitted him. Prior to his arrival, he told his supporters to be strong.
The CBI had stated in its chargesheet that a bribe had been paid for grant of official favours when Yeddyurappa was the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Yeddyurappa, his two sons, son-in-law, JSW Steel and four of its Bellary based affiliates were named as accused in the case.

On October 16 2012, the CBI had filed a chargesheet alleging that Rs 20 crore had been deposited in the personal bank account of B Y Raghavendra, Vijendra (sons of Yeddyurappa) and Sohan Kumar, his son-in-law.
The amount, according to the chargesheet, was deposited between August and September, 2010. Further the chargesheet also states that a sum of Rs 20 crore had been donated to the Prerana Education Trust which is run by Yeddyurappa's sons.
It was also alleged that the sum of was deposited to facilitate the waiver of mining dues and also move files relating to mining lease applications. The CBI states that the amount came from South West Mining Company which is an affiliate of JSW steel.
Further it was alleged that Yeddyurappa and his family members had illegally sold off an acre of land notified by the government near Bengaluru to JSW steel affiliates for Rs 20 crore. This according to the CBI was done to cover up the bribe on behalf of the steel firm.
The CBI said that the land was acquired illegally and the same was made possible by misusing Yeddyurappa's official position as the chief minister.
