Bengaluru: Another road caves in over Metro tunnel, civic bodies swing into action

By Oneindia Staff Writer

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Commuters on the Kempegowda Road were not prepared for this unpleasant surprise on Tuesday. A part of the road over the metro tunnel caved in, creating a 2 feet wide and 10 feet deep hole.

Evident of the shoddy work done by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd and other civic agencies, the incident swung the agencies into action.

The incident happened at 9:45 am when a truck passed the area. The rear tyre of the truck was stuck in the hole for 30 minutes till the time help arrived. Meanwhile, the BMRCL claimed that all precautions had been taken while digging the tunnel and that the exact reason was unidentified.

Experts, however, said that it was because of the vibrations caused by the machines boring the tunnel that the road has weakened. The recent heavy rains may have also contributed to the collapse.

Experts further believe that roads may cave in various parts of the city where the metro network is passing through the underground. A traffic advisor to the government of Karnataka, on anonymity said, that the BMRCL should make pits at one meter interval and and should fill them up with cement and concrete, which will help strengthen the soil and prevent further caving in.

This was the second incident in the last few months.
