The Congress leaders including working President Dinesh Gundu Rao and Women's Wing President Laxmi Hebbalkar took part in a protest against demonetisation move by the Modi government. Dozens of Congress members had gathered for the protest in Belagavi but local residents hired from nearby slums created a ruckus post the protest accusing the Congress of misleading them.
“They promised us each Rs 100 and said that they will issue ration card. Only after we went there we realised that it was a protest against Modi. Why should we shout slogans against him when we support his move against black money?”, a woman told a television channel.
The accusations came as a severe embarrassment to the Congress that tried to distance itself from it. The women's wing president Laxmi Hebbalkar said “I have no clue what these women are talking about. I didn't hire them to come here. They are speaking of it only now. You should talk to the local MLA”, and rushed off in her car even as the women and journalists continued to question her.
