New Delhi, Nov 26: Everyone is fleeing India to escape the clutches of the law, the Supreme Court said while making an indirect reference to the likes of Vijay Mallya and Lallit Modi.
The Bench comprising Justices J S Khehar and Arun Mishra,however, did not name the two, but observed that it was the duty of the Union Government to get back such persons.
The case on hand related to Ritwika Awasty, a business woman residing in London. She has refused to return to India and face criminal trial. She had been allowed to go to London and meet her ailing husband, but never returned to India. Inability on part of the centre During the course of the arguments, Additional Solicitor General, Ranjit Kumar told the court that government did not have the details of her passport. "We can get her back only after these details are provided," Kumar told the Bench. The Bench was, however, not amused and said, "It is your duty to bring her back. Somewhere we get a feeling that you are not interested in bringing her back," the Bench observed. "We see everyone is running away these days to evade proceedings. It is necessary to bring back such people and set a precedent," the Bench further observed. The Bench took note of the fact that there were over 100 fugitives taking shelter abroad to escape the clutches of the law. Such persons must be brought back and a precedent must be set, the SC also observed. OneIndia News
