Terrorists use Bitcoin, demonetisation won't impact them: Digvijaya Singh

"Can the Prime Minister, Government of India and particularly the NSA be so naive to believe, that terrorism can be erased by simply demonetisation," he said.

Panaji, Nov 23 Terrorists use digital currency like Bitcoin and demonetisation will have no bearing on terror funding, Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh said on Wednesday, faulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for putting poor Indians to hardship.

"Most illegal activities like drug peddling and terror activities are now done through Bitcoin, the digital currency, ditto currency. It is dealt through a different software and it is impossible to trace," Singh told reporters at a press conference at the party's state headquarters in Panaji.

"Can the Prime Minister, Government of India and particularly the NSA be so naive to believe, that terrorism can be erased by simply demonetisation," he said.

Bitcoin is a web-based alternative currency which is largely used to conduct unregulated transactions across international borders with ease. International terror group the ISIS is believed to have used Bitcoin to fund some of its terror activities.

Singh also said that Modi's move to demonetise currency would have no impact on terror activities, as can be seen in the incident where the army recovered Rs 2,000 denomination notes from a cache recently recovered from a slain terrorist in Bandipore district in Jammu and Kashmir.

"New currency notes have been found in possession of certain terrorists in Kashmir Valley. From where did they get the currency notes when even the common people are not getting them," Singh said.
