Ahmedabad, Mar 02: The ruling BJP recorded a massive victory in the local body polls in Gujarat on Tuesday by winning clear majority in all 31 district panchayats as well as in 196 out of 231 taluka panchayats and 74 out of 81 municipalities.
The Congress, the main opposition party in the state, won a clear majority in only one municipality and 18 taluka panchayats, while AIMIM and AAP also made their presence felt.

In district panchayat elections, BJP registers victory on 735 panchayats seats, Congress on 157, & AAP on 2 seats.

According to trends at 1 pm, BJP seems to have consolidated its lead and is likely to win by a huge margin in the municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats. Congress is a distant second. The AAP has won about 46 seats so far in the local body polls.

Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani today said that Congress is neither worthy of power nor for the opposition.
The Congress has been wiped out in Viramgam, Hardik Patel's area. The region had caused trouble to the BJP ahead of 2015 polls due to the polarization of Patidar votes. The BJP has won taluka panchayat and the municipality.
In Vadnagar Taluka Panchayat, the saffron party has won 11 seats, Congress 1, AAP 1 and Others 1. Counting underway for remaining four seats.
In Amreli district panchayat, the constituency of leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani comes to power as BJP gets more than 50% seats.
Out of total 36 seats of Rajkot, BJP is leading on 25 seats, while Congress has bagged 11 seats.
BJP has stolen a march in the Gujarat local bodies elections, with Congress a distant second.

Out of 231 taluka panchayats, BJP leading in 73, Congress in 11 and others in 3. Out of 31 district panchayats, BJP leading in 28. In 81 municipalities BJP leading in 60, Congress in 6 and others in 1.
According to initial voting trends, BJP leads in 306 seats in municipalities, Congress leads in 41 seats.

With counting underway, BJP took early lead in municipalities, district panchayats and taluka panchayats results.

Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM, which also contested local body polls in Gujarat for the first time, won seven seats in Ahmedabad's Jamalpur and Maktampura wards.
The saffron party bagged 483 of the 576 seats. The AAP bagged 27 seats in Surat, making inroads in the state. The main opposition Congress got a drubbing, as it won only 55 seats and failed even to open account in Surat.
In the 21 February elections, the BJP won with a majority across all the six municipal corporations - Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.
The polling for the Gujarat local bodies elections were held on Sunday. For the 8,235 seats, the BJP fielded 8,161 candidates, Congress 7,778, Aam Aadmi Party 2,090, among others.
The Aam Aadmi Party opened its account in the Jamnagar panchayat tehsil, Business Standard reported, as counting of votes cast during the second phase of the Gujarat local body polls commenced on Tuesday.
