Singur, Dec 11: Social activist Medha Patkar has launched a door-to door campaign in Singur in West Bengal against the acquisition of land for the proposed Tata Motors car plant. Terming the proposed plant as illegal, Patkar said, Tata Motors should defer production at the factory and uphold the wishes of the villagers. “They (Tata Motors) have not started any production here though announcements have been made. If people of Singur are protesting, they should not start production here against their wishes. At present also, whatever little they are doing is illegal," said Patkar.

Tata Motors started work on its factory in Singur earlier this year on what is touted as the world's cheapest car for 100,000 rupees.

But the project, which has become a test case for the ruling Communists party in West Bengal, has been mired in controversy with some farmers declaring that the government took their land against their will.

There have been regular protests in West Bengal this year over the acquisition of agriculture land for industry.
