Mumbai, Aug 28: Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh drew flak for his comment suggesting that "the people should choose between promiscuous culture that allows kissing in public or a city made safe by moral policing."

The remark comes in the wake of the Mumbai gangrape case, where a 22-year-old photojournalist was gangraped by five men two weeks back. Singh in an interview said that a balance was needed and people were confused on the kind of society they desired for. "That's why am asking whether on one hand couples should be allowed to kiss in public and on the road, should they be allowed to indulge in obscene things," he said.

"On one hand you want to have a promiscuous culture, on the other you want a safe and secure environment for the people," he added.

He went on to add and said that he didn't understand journalists and media activists, who criticised the police for moral policing. "Should we do moral policing or immoral policing," he asked.

The Mumbai Police is known for cracking the whip on many people in the name of moral policing. First Home Minister R R Patil banned dance bars and said that they were 'corrupting the youth.' Recently raids were conducting on pubs and nightclubs and outdated laws were slapped at them.

In May BJP's corporator Ritu Tawde demanded a ban on lingerie mannequins in the state as they were "prompting rape and sex crimes.

Similarly many incidents have been reported when the Mumbai police has gone a spree of moral policing, where they have caught young couples for no reason.

Recently a circular was passed asking the police personnel to take action against couples indulginh in indecent behaviour but it was soon withdrawn after the media raised the issue.
