Mumbai gangrape: Ujjwal Nikam appointed as public prosecutor

Mumbai, Aug 26: The Maharashtra government appointed senior criminal lawyer Ujjwal Nikam as the public prosecutor in the Mumbai gangrape case of August 22. The appointment was made on Sunday.

Nikam confirmed to the PTI that Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan rang him up on the issue and he agreed to play his part. He said the state home minister, R R Patil, too had spoken to him on the issue. The CM said that the government wanted "to engage the best legal talent in the case and see that maximum punishment is meted out to the culprits in the gangrape of the photojournalist," a PTI report said.

On Sunday, the fifth man accused in raping the journalist was arrested from the Delhi-Haryana border. The third and the fourth arrested were produced in the court and were remanded to police custody till August 30.

The victim, working with an English magazine, was gangraped in the premises of an abandoned factory in southern Mumbai where she had gone with with a male colleague on an official assignment.
