Misuse of red beacons & sirens is a 'menace' to society: Supreme Court

New Delhi, Aug 6: The Supreme Court on Monday came down heavily on unauthorised use of red beacons, sirens and multi-tone horns by VIP vehicles on roads.

The apex court said that such cases should be dealt with strictly and 'heavy and exemplary' fines should be imposed on those vehicles which violate the rule.

Terming them as a "menace to society", the SC also ordered that only a restricted number of people should be allowed to use beacons and sirens on their vehicles.

"A small section of society does not bother about the law. Your law permits a very small number to use red beacons. Stop its misuse by anyone and everyone. Remove all sirens and multi-tone horns from all vehicles. If you do not tell us the mechanism to stop it, then we will pass orders. How can citizens be treated differently," a bench of Justices GS Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda said.

"No one apart from High ranking dignitaries, ambulance, police and military should be using them", it added.

Two weeks time has been given to the Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran and Additional Solicitor General Siddharth Luthra for immediate implementation of rules and regulations under the Central Motor Vehicles Act.

The next hearing in this case will be on August 19.A resident of Uttar Pradesh had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on misuse of red beacons, sirens and multi-tone horns.
