Spain train crash: Driver charged with reckless homicide

Santiago de compostela, July 29: Four days after deadly train crash accident shook northwestern Spain, the 52-year-old driver, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, on Monday, has been charged with 79 counts of reckless homicide.

The fatal train crash killed at least 80 in Spain last Thursday after the train jumped the tracks on a curvy stretch just before arriving in the northwestern shrine city of Santiago de Compostela.

The driver, who confessed that he was running the train ‘double the speed limit' was released on bail after being questioned by a judge.

According to an agency report, the judge ordered him to report to court every week and forbade him from leaving Spain for six months, the High Court of Galicia, which is leading the investigation, said in a statement yesterday.

He also banned him from driving trains for six months.

Francisco received light head injury in the crash and was recovering in a hospital.

Yesterday, a police car delivered him in handcuffs to the Court for the closed hearing. He had spent the previous night in a police cell. Garzon Amo was dressed in a blue shirt and a scar was visible from his injury.
