Washington, July 20: Will Detroit, once the fourth-largest city in the USA in terms of population, turn into a depopulated wasteland? Reports suspect that the city could meet a harsh fate after it filed for bankruptcy.

Dilapidated buildings, urban decay, crumbling social services and drug-related homicides make the city look a shadow of its glorious past and many fear the mass exodus of its inhabitants, hit by deteriorating social conditions and unemployment, could soon see the city turn into a wasteland punctuated by abandoned remains.

Even the once dominant auto industry of the city could turn into a pale shadow of its former self.

Judge against push for bankruptcy

Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder on Friday backed his decision to force the city into bankruptcy in a bid to stop its long decline and settle the ever-deepening debt crisis. He called for patience before Detroit's fate was reversed. However, a state judge said that Snyder had overstepped his jurisdiction by approving the city's bankruptcy filing.
