Gujarat
Ahmedabad, July 17: According to an exclusive article published by the DNA, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to take technology's aid to control traffic in the underpasses during peak monsoon.

Censor-based systems will be installed to get rid of the traffic problems and waterlogging, following heavy rains.

It has been designed to determine the water level and show a green or a red signal, depending on the danger level.

"When the level of water is between 0 and 1.4 feet, the sensor will give a green signal indicating that vehicles can pass. If the level reaches 1.5 feet or beyond, then the sensor will turn red and the traffic will not be allowed to pass," said IK Patel, deputy commissioner of the light department.

To ensure that no cars travel through the underpass when the signal is red, the department has also arranged for a boom or a barricade, which would roll down automatically to stop traffic.

Both the systems, however, are in the testing stage. While the sensor has been installed at the Parimal underpass, the boom has been installed in the Akbarnagar pass.

Authorities say that although both the systems are being tested separately, they would finally be merged, depending on their functionality.

Right now, there are ten underpasses in the city and all of them are to get these systems, if things go right during the test. The installation cost of the entire system would be approximately Rs3.25 lakh, of which the sensor would cost Rs1.5 lakh and the boom Rs1.75 lakh.
