Setback for Kalmadi, loses Asian Athletics Association poll

New Delhi, July 1: Suresh Kalmadi lost crucial Asian Athletics Association Election on Monday, July 1. The 69-year-old lost the poll by 2 votes to Brig Dalham al-Hamad.

Kalmadi, an accused of Commonwealth Games (CWG 2010) corruption cases, had contested the pollfor the fourth term as the chief of the body.

Total 45 athletics associations from different countries decided the fate of Kalmadi and Hamad, the Senior Vice-President of the body and President of the oil-rich Qatar Athletic Association.

Kalmadi was arrested and was sent to jail following the several alleged corruption charges in connection with CWG 2010. The Congress MP later was released on bail. Kalmadi was the chief of affairs of the AAA since 2000.

Earlier he had claimed that he would not contest the AAA elections as he did not want to hold any sorts post in the country. However, he had sought re-election for the top job of the continental body.

Speaking about his victory in the poll against Kalmadi, Hamad was quoted as saying, "It was tough, can not say it was easy. We can not underestimate Suresh Kalmadi."
