JIPMER to set up International School of Public Health

Puducherry, June 4: The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has inked an MOU with the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) to set up an International School of Public Health in the Centrally sponsored JIPMER here.

This is to ensure adequate number of health professionals in public health education, epidemiology, nutrition and health service delivery and to achieve quality health care services, Director of JIPMER Dr T S Ravikumar told reporters.

The proposal to start the school in association with the HSPH has been included in the twelfth plan and the project would involve an outlay of Rs 150 crore.

The school offering PG course would be set up in the course of this year and would have 12 candidates on its rolls, he said, adding, duration of the course would be two years.

The Curriculum Committee of JIPMER has prepared the necessary syllabus for the programme. Four delegates of the Harvard School of Public Health- Peter Berman (Professor of Practice of Global Health Systems and Economics), Richard Cash (Senior Lecturer in Global Health), Ashish Jha (Professor of Health Policy and Management) and David Hunter (Professor in Cancer Prevention)- are now camping at JIPMER for an in depth discussion on the various aspects and modalities of the school.
