Kolkata, May 17: A Class III student succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in West Bengal after his head was banged against the wall by a teacher.

It was learnt that the seven-year-old student, Bapi Joardar, of Nirdeshkhali Natupara in Basanti in South 24-Parganas district, was mercilessly beaten up by the teacher in a rural school run under the government's Sarva Siksha programme on Wednesday.

The teacher, Champarani Mondal, was manhandled and her residence was vandalised by the local people. She was later handed over to the police who brought a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against her.

Corporal punishment has been in the headlines in the state in the past few years although it has been banned by the Supreme Court and later by RTA legislations.

Mondal banged the heads of Bapi and one of his colleague, Tanmay, to stop them from quarrelling. She also beat them with a stick and banged Bapi's head against a brick wall. The boy did not tell about it to his parents but he started vomitting in the evening. He was taken to a state-run hospital here where he died at 5 am on Friday.

A local person said Mondal was suspended from her job earlier as well owing to rough behaviour and an inclination to torture students. Later, she rejoined by a court of the high court.

Bapi's parents were in a state of shock.
