New Delhi, May 17: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was today conferred an award by Rotary International for Delhi government's efforts to eradicate polio from the city.

The Polio Eradication Champion award was presented to Dikshit at a function here by Bob Scott, Chairman of International Polio Plus Committee of Rotary International.

Speaking on the occasion, Dikshit complimented efforts of officials of Health department, doctors and para-medical staff for their hard work in freeing the city from polio.

She said not a single case of polio had been reported in Delhi in the last three years.

"Despite migration from other states, the city government has been able to make Delhi a polio-free state. It is a proud moment for us," she said.

The Polio Eradication Champion award, instituted in 1995, is the highest honour Rotary presents to heads of state, health agency leaders and others to recognize their commitment to making the world polio-free.

The previous recipients of the award include Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Former US President Bill Clinton and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Bill Gates.
