Tihar Jail
New Delhi, April 5: One of the six accused in the Delhi gangrape case who had applied for interim bail to attend an interview on April 7 was beaten up so badly in the Tihar Jail here that his hand was fractured, his lawyer said on Friday.

AP Singh told newspersons outside the fast track court hearing the sensational case that a few of the jail "inmates and police officials" thrashed his client Vinay Sharma on Thursday evening. "Vinay was supposed to give exams for the Indian Air Force. His right hand is broken," the lawyer said.

Though Vinay had to undergo treatment at the GB Pant Hospital, he appeared in the court on Friday. Singh alleged that the inmates and police had assaulted Vinay to stop him from appearing for the interview on Sunday.

The lawyer told the fast track court that another client of his namely Akshay Thakur too was similarly attacked inside the jail some days ago. "The situation is getting worse in the jail," the lawyer stressed.

On Thursday, Akshay said that he had received several threats inside the jail. He recounted how the sentries posted outside his cell verbally abuse him almost everyday.

"Whenever the duty changes, the sentries exchange lewd and abusive remarks about us and say that we should be killed. They have threatened to kill me several times," he rued.

Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna who is trying the accused has asked Singh to submit a complaint about this in writing.

It is noteworthy that Ram Singh, the main accused in the case, was found hanging at his cell in Tihar last month. Though officials said that he had ended his own life, Ram Singh's family members claimed that it was impossible for him to commit suicide as his right hand had been badly fractured in an accident some years ago.

After his death, the other accused pleaded to be shifted out of Tihar. Their plea was rejected but the fast track court ordered the authorities to provide them adequate security.
