Karnataka results: No celebration yet for Cong
The polls have generated so much interest that it was trending in top ten on Twitter.
Initial trends show that the Congress was leading in urban polls, while the Bharatiya Janata Party was finding the going tough, often billed as semi-final before the final polls for the assembly in the May. And the results stayed that way.
However, one must remember that only about 86 lakh voters went to the polls (turnout was 70 percent) and the state has nearly 4.18 crore registered voters, who will participate in the assembly elections. There are 16 lakh new and young voters, who could swing either way.
Today's results point to a hung assembly if the Congress sits like a smiling Buddha and basks in the glory of this win, and the BJP gives up too early.
The BJP can gain from this poll outcome if it starts corrections in its poll strategy. The party with a cadre at grassroots can still recover as the urban local poll results are negative vote (against BJP misrule) and not a whole hearted support for the Congress.
The Congress has failed to project a leader and still does not have a coherent election plan. It also lacks committed workers who can galvanise lost voter base. the party is know to depend on hired crowd and the ruling BJP, which is aware of such games, can stall the Congress game plan.
However, BS Yeddyurappa's Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) has put up a dismal performance, even in Shimoga. Similar was the fate of the Bellary brothers, who had launched the BSR Congress. They have been routed in their stronghold.
Final results: The Congress managed to win 1960 seats, the BJP got 906 and the JDS has 905 seats in its kitty. The KJP got 274 and the BSR Congress could not even touch three figure mark. Its tally was 86. The independents were in huge numbers at 777.
In the last elections to ULBs in 2007, out of the total 5007 wards, the Congress had come first winning 1606, followed by JDS 1502 and the BJP 1180.
