Guwahati, March 1: The hype surrounding Union Budget 2013 might have shrouded election results of three north-eastern states on Thursday, Feb 28. But, results of the three states--Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya--have brought into light some interesting facts.

While in neighbouring Tripura and Nagaland, Manik Sarkar and Neiphiu Rio are celebrating, in Meghalaya senior politician PA Sangma is unhappy and sulking over his defeat.

In fact, Manik Sarkar has created history of sort by gearing up to become Tripura's Chief Minister for fourth consecutive time. Even Neiphiu Rio is happy as he is all set to become Nagaland's Chief Minister for third time in a row.

But, Sangma, a well-known politician and former Lok Sabha Speaker, who till recently harboured the ambition of becoming India's President faced a humiliating defeat in his home turf.

Sangma's newly formed National People's Party (NPP), a tribal centric party, managed to win just two seats out of the 33 it contested in the assembly polls.

But, it was clean sweep for Sarkar and Rio in Tripura and Nagaland.

Rio's Naga Peoples Front (NPF) retained power in the state by winning 38 seats in the 60-member Assembly. While Left in Tripura won 50 seats in the 60-member Assembly.

Political experts say, under Sarkar's rule Tripura has managed to achieve peace by tackling the vexed issue of insurgency to a great success in the state. Moreover, Sarkar and his party men have managed to stay clean and gave the state a corruption free rule. In fact, in a way Sarkar saved Left from all its disgrace. Left which has been recently thwarted from Kerala and West Bengal, managed to hold power at least in one state of the country.

Rio's strong support to the ongoing Naga peace process helped him gain the confidence of Nagas in the hill state.

In Meghalaya, Congress won 29 out of the 60 seats. Experts say, in Meghalaya the election results are more about Sangma's loss than Congress's victory.
