Jammu, Feb 12: In rural India, parents entrust the lives of their children in the hands of the school authorities but this week's incident will shake their faith in the system of education and especially the teacher.

In a shocking incident that came to light on Monday, two teachers at a madrassa allegedly burnt the feet of a 11-year-old student by pressing hot iron after the child tried to run away from Madrassa Nasurat-ul-uloom in Ahdarkotein, Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The boy, Mohmmad Musharaf, was punished by Anwar-ul-Haq and Ahmed Jameel, the two teachers as "punishment" for trying to run away from the madrassa a few days ago. According to Mubassir Latifee, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, both the teachers have been arrested.

Their insensitiveness was highlighted when the maternal uncle of child visited the madrassa. He reported the matter to police, which registered a case and arrested the two teachers. The child is recuperating in a Rajouri hospital.

The very fact that the child tried to run away from the madrassa means that there is something wrong with the institution itself. The child may have tried to escape repeated brutality of the teachers and ended up being treated with hot iron.

Rajouri district has witnessed two cases of brutality by teachers in the recent past. On Dec 6, 2012, the right arm of a nine-year-old girl was fractured after she was allegedly caned by a teacher for coming late to school. On Aug 18, 2012, a Class IX suffered kidney failure after he was allegedly thrashed by a teacher.
