2nd attempt to ban Vishwaroopam foiled;Kamal Haasan relieved
Madras High Court on Tuesday, Feb 5 dismissed a petition which had asked for a direction to ban the movie in its current form throughout the country untill it is edited.
Overruling the petition filed by C Jebakumar George, the High Court said, "This is the second attempt to stall the release of the movie, Vishwaroopam."
The High Court turned down the "plea for a direction to the Central and State Governments and the Central Board of Film Certification to ban the Kamal Hassan-starrer ‘Vishwaroopam' in its present form throughout the country until the film is edited to be in conformity with the guidelines under XII and XIII of the Cinematograph Act."
The petitioner earlier had claimed that he was shocked to find many scenes which according to him were very violent and derogative. George accused the film offends the sentiments of Christians community.
Earlier the film had faced immense opposition when a group of Muslim community had protested against the release of the movie and Tamil Nadu government posed a ban on it. However, with the intervention of Madras High Court and mutual understanding between the protesting group and the film makers, the movie is re-scheduled to be released in the state on Feb 7.
The multilingual movie has been released in different states of the country and in overseas as well. After the hullaballoo over the movie, Kamal had written a letter addressing his fans. Thanking his fans for all their support, Kamal wrote, "I have safeguarded your addresses, in case politics and religion hound me once again to take refuge. I know I have safe homes to feed me and keep me throughout Tamil Nadu."
