ZTE India
Bangalore, Oct 29: Many young software engineers may lose their source of earning bread and butter for themselves and their family members as ZTE India may scale down it Research and Development (R&D) unit as part of a cost-cutting drive.

ZTE Corp, the second largest telecom equipment makers in China, however, refused to comment on specific queries regarding its move of laying off its employees working in its R&D unit.

Despite a whooping sales growth in India, the company surprisingly reported to go for a cost-cutting drive by terminating its employees. ZTE has about 1,600 workers in India, about 1,000 of which are direct staff and 560 are indirect staffers outside the company's rolls.

Recently, the company had issued a media statement saying, "ZTE India will optimise operational efficiency by merging its existing R&D setup in Bangalore with its Indian Engineering & Service Centre (IESC)."

The Economic Times report informed that ZTE India's R&D unit develops a host of telecom software applications in the mobile VAS space, including caller ring-back tones (CRBTs), call centre applications and billing solutions. Key customers include Vodafone India and Uninor.
