Rape
Bangalore, Oct 21: The city police have arrested seven persons so far in connection with the gang rape of a second-year law student here on Oct 13.

The 21-year-old who is pursuing a course at the National Law School of India University had gone out that day with an IBM employee whom she had recently befriended. On the way back to the hostel where the victim stays, her friend stopped the car to have a brief chat.

As the duo was walking through the adjoining forest, a gang of eight surrounded them and demanded money from the victim's friend who said that he had left his wallet behind in the car. When he went to get the cash, the gang dragged the victim deep into the forest and raped her.

Two police teams were subsequently formed to catch the culprits. On Oct 18, the teams took six Iruliga tribals into custody. Maddura, 20, Doddaheeraiah, 19, Mallesha, 20, Eeraiah, 20, Shivanna, 20, and Yeliyaiah, 23, hail from Dasegowdana Doddi village in Ramanagaram district of Karnataka.

All the accused are wood cutters. They have reportedly confessed to raping the law student. Police said that the gang had entered the Bangalore University's Jnanabharathi campus on Oct 13 to axe down some sandalwood trees.

Rama, another accused in the case, was spotted along with three other men near the Microbiology Department on the same campus around 6.15 p.m yesterday. When police surrounded the group, Rama attacked one of the constables Ramachandra with lethal weapons.

Kengeri police inspector Satyanarayana and CK Achukattu inspector Malatesh immediately opened fire in self defence. Rama sustained bullet injuries in his legs and therefore could not flee from the spot. However, two of his associates escaped.

Both Rama and Ramachandra are undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital. According to doctors, the latter is out of danger. Rama's condition is stable, they added.
