Ajmal Kasab
Meerut, Aug 30: With the noose tightening around Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving Lashkar terrorist who was awarded the death sentence by the Supreme Court on Wednesday for waging war against India, the talk on who will do the national duty of hanging Kasab has started.

With no concrete news on when Kasab will be sent to the gallows, noted hangman Mammu Singh had, in earlier instance, expressed his desire to be bestowed with the job of executing Kasab. Singh, who was working in the Meerut Central jail, was eager to hang Kasab since he had committed a heinous crime and deserves nothing less than capital punishment.

Earlier, Singh had expressed his willingness to hang Kasab earlier and has been quoted as saying, "I am as eager to hang Kasab as eager the country is to see him hang till death. I want to say one thing that neither Kasab is my enemy nor is he my friend. My enemy is crime. And the person who commits crime becomes my enemy. Neither he would have committed a crime nor would he have been sentenced to death."

Mammu Singh alias Mammu Jallad was the son of Kallu Singh who was responsible for the hanging of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Mammu too wanted to do his duty to hang 'enemies' of India but passed away on May 19, 2011. As per his son, Pawan Singh, "My father's last wish was to hang Afzal Guru and Kasab but he could not do that. Till his last breath he was waiting for orders to do the honours. My great grandfather Lakshman Majeera, a hangman during the British rule, had put to gallows Shaheed Bhagat Singh. My father always felt ashamed while talking about his lineage, but I want to reclaim my family's respect."
