Indian govt starts blocking Twitter accounts, urls?
Bangalore,
Aug
21:
There
were
many
controversies
over
the
news
that
Indian
government
may
block
several
urls
and
tweets
which
were
associated
with
hate
messages
against
North-East
people.
However,
some
shocking
tweets
show
that
the
government
has
already
started
blocking
tweets
and
urls.
A tweet on Tuesday, Aug 21 caught many people's attentions when it wrote, What... has govt started banning Twitter Accounts or blocking urls ?? got this msg while visiting @northeastblog tweet." However, the blocked url is opening in BlackBerry, informed.
It seems that a tweet, which was posted by a person (who tweets on the name of North East India), has been blocked. The search results shows this message - "This website/URL has been blocked until further notice either pursuant to court orders or on the Directions issued by the Department of Telecommunications."
With Indian cyber sleuths and popular sites like Facebook and YouTube confirming that the morphed pics and other fake messages of the Assam violence were uploaded and spread from Pakistan, Twitter on the other hand has refused to cooperate with the probe in connection with ominous posts.
Citing the negative response, the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday asked Telecom ministry to take strong action against different social networking sites including Twitter and many other websites.
Government would block at least 310 pages by Wednesday. Government sources also informed that they have already identified 65 pages. The telecom ministry also will take legal actions against 28 web pages, most of which are on Twitter.
Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar has been quoted as saying to media channels that legal action will be slapped against all those sites refusing to cooperate with the probe. The morphed video and images had triggered the biggest ever mass exodus of North East people in recent times.
254 websites have faced the axe after they carried such inflammatory messages. Many arrests have been made in Pune, Coimbatore and Bangalore for spreading and forwarding such messages.
