Vilasrao Deshmukh
Chennai, Aug 8: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Union Minister for Heavy Industries Vilasrao Deshmukh has been suffering from liver cancer. [UPDATE: Vilasrao Deshmukh critical, Maha CM rushes to Chennai]

A doctor, who has been attending Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh at Global Hospital in Chennai, stated that the 67-year-old minister has hepatocellular carcinoma, most common type of liver cancer, which has led to multiple organ failure. The former minister was under treatment of liver failure over a year ago.

"He is on ventilator support and was given dialysis. However, his condition has not deteriorated since his admission," a doctor was quoted as saying on Wednesday, Aug 8.

Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai but citing his deteriorating health condition, he was brought in a special flight to Chennai from Mumbai on Monday. Since Tuesday, he has been kept on life support.

His son Riteish Deshmukh, a Bollywood actor, expressed his willingness to donate a part of his liver to his ailing father. However, the doctor said, "We have not ruled out a cadaver transplant either. We will put him on the wait-list. But that is only after he stabilises."

Following the actor's proposal, the doctors began examining whether tissues of the father and son match or not. According to transplant rules, the doctors can conduct liver transplantation on Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh only after an authorised committee headed by the Tamil Nadu director of medical education gives permission.

Meanwhile, sources informed that Vilasrao's second son, Amit Deshmukh spoke to Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and informed about his father's health condition. "Amit spoke to Chavan and briefed him on his father's health. He expressed concern, but was optimistic of an improvement in a day or two," senior government official was quoted as saying.

Global Hospital sources in Chennai too on Wednesday informed that Vilasrao Deshmukh is stable but remains in the ICU.
