National shame; Kalmadi to attend Olympics
Only yesterday he had sought the court's permission to attend the Olympics citing that he was a member of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Council. The court had asked him to furnish a bond of Rs 10 lakh. The counsel arguing for Kalmadi assured the court that he would be present for every hearing (during Kalmadi's absence) and would not seek adjournments.
The CBI investigating the multi-crore CWG scam had opposed Kalmadi's travel plans saying that it would hamper day-to-day court proceedings of the CWG Scam. Kalmadi is an accused in the case. Sports Minister Ajay Maken had commented that Kalmadi does not deserve to attend the London Olympics.
The CBI had arrested Kalmadi on Apr 25, 2011 on charges of criminal conspiracy to buy timing, scoring and result (TSR) system from a Swiss company at an inflated cost of Rs 141 crore, causing a loss over Rs 90 crore to the exchequer.
