Washington, Jun 6: The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday announced that it will ban junk-food advertising from its websites and TV channels from 2015 in a bid to extend their support to help fight obesity among children in the US.

"This new initiative is truly a game changer for the health of our children," said First Lady, Michelle Obama.

"This is a major American company, a global brand, that is literally changing the way it does business so that our kids can lead healthier lives," she said.

All the drinks and foods advertised on Disney Junior, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney-owned children's websites and Radio Disney would, from 2015, be required to meet nutritional guidelines, said Disney, in a statement.

"The nutrition guidelines are aligned to federal standards, promote fruit and vegetable consumption and call for limiting calories and reducing saturated fat, sodium and sugar," it said.

Disney also said that it will introduce a 'Mickey Check' icon this year so that families would benefit by identifying nutritious food and menu items from its retail shops and theme parks.

Seventeen per cent of children in US are obese, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine. The report also said that the figures have tripled in 30 years. It, however, warned of a 'catastrophic' impact on productivity and national health care.
