New Delhi, Jan 12: The Cabinet committee will decide on the fate of Unique Identification (UID) project which is led by Nandan Nilekani.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Planning Commission Chairman Montek Ahluwalia and UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani will attend the meeting presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss on the contentious issues of the project including duplication of National Population Registry (NPR) and UID expenses and enrollment of citizens for Aadhaar numbers.

Planning Commission stated that it is expecting to complete its targeted 20 crore enrollment by end of Jan 2012. Multiple registrar will collect the demographic and biometric information of the people.

The plan panel claimed that several welfare programmes could be delivered to beneficiaries through Aadhaar.

According to government's note, UIDAI will collect 20 crore biometric details up till March 2012 and later it would be converged with NPR. The authority can use the biometric data of the UIDAI and issue citizenship cards with unique number on it.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry refused to use the data collected by UIDAI as they have received several complaints against the illegal immigrants who got the Aadhaar number.
