Supreme Court
New Delhi, Oct 10: The Supreme Court on Monday, Oct 10 adjourned the hearing on a petition asking transfer of a case pending before Madras High Court in which the execution of death sentence awarded to three assassins of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 was stayed. The decision was taken after an apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya directed the court to hear the plea on Oct 19.

Meanwhile, the plea by Chennai based lawyer I.K. Venkat who is seeking transfer of the case from the high court to the apex court was opposed by senior counsel Ram Jethmalani who appeared for the three assassins. Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government also opposed the plea for transfer of the case.

In 1999, the Supreme Court of India had confirmed the death sentences of four convicts; Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan and Nalini. However, Nalini's death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the intervention of Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi's widow and the Chairperson of UPA government. Mrs Gandhi had considered the mercy petitions soon after Nalini delivered a baby girl in jail.
