IIT heads accept the declining quality of students

Mumbai, Oct 10: IIT heads agreed with Narayan Murthy's statement about decline in the quality of students joining the institute.

Bhaskar Ramamurthi, IIT Madras director said that most of the students clear the entrance test with the help of coaching classes. "There is a limit to what an instrument like an entrance exam can do. Taking school scores into consideration should allow us to get well-rounded students," he said.

Gautam Baru, IIT-Guwahati director said that aspirants start their preparations quite early. "By the time they join the IIT system, they are mentally fatigued. They want to sell soaps, not become engineers."

He added that many of them are not even interested in engineering.

Half of the graduates generally join managerial positions in FMCG companies, consultancy firms and the finance sector. Earlier, it was a pride for IITs as best students were selected from all across the country.

Out of 13,195 students, two thirds took the help of professionals to clear the toughest exam.

According to the survey, out of 4.68 lakh candidates appeared for the entrance test, 86,719 completed their schooling from villages, 1.35 lakh from towns and 2.46 lakh from cities.

In Guwahati, village students mainly cleared the entrance test whereas in Delhi, students from cities cracked the exam.

Around 7,396 CBSE students cleared the entrance test whereas 5,195 from the state board and ICSE cleared the exam .
