New Delhi, Sept 30: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday, Sept 30 demanded the resignation of Home Minister P Chidambaram over the 2G Scam. CPI-M said that there was enough proof about his direct role in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

"He (Chidambaram) has said the matter is closed. I am afraid the matter is not closed. We are demanding his resignation in light of the mounting evidence about his direct role and involvement in the policy and implementation of allocation of licenses of 2G spectrum," said CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat.

Referring to the finance minister's note, Karat said that it was the work of collective departments, including that of Prime Minister's Office which was also coordinated by Cabinet Secretary.

Earlier, Party Politburo member Sitaram Yechury had said that the party should take collective responsibility for the scam.

"The fact is that this inter-ministerial note was the result of a collective exercise which pin-pointed the role of Chidambaram," he had said.

Commenting on Finance Minister's statement on Sept 29th, Karat said he had "an onerous task of rescuing his cabinet colleague. I sympathise with his plight...I think Mukherjee has spoken the truth, which is good."

Earlier, on Sept 29, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is probing into the scam had given a clean chit to Chidambaram saying that the then finance minister had advocated for the auction of spectrum instead of first-come-first-served policy adopted by jailed former Telecom Minister A Raja.
