Mamata boots Left out of Indian politics

Mamata Banerjee
Is the Left Party another dinosaur waiting to get extinct out of the face of Indian democracy. The fact was raised when the Left conceded defeat in the last remaining bastions of Bengal and Kerala. This is the first time in the history of Indian politics that the Left has not been able to leave a mark in any of the states they contested.

The Left has had to let go off a 34-year-old stronghold in West Bengal with Mamata crying for a paribartan (change) from the apparent lack of rule in that riddled with many issues. The Communist Party of India – Marxist ousted from the politics of Bengal is nothing but dramatic and catastrophic for them.

But Kerala is a state that has always sprung some surprise for each election. With the UDF and LDF alternatively ruling the state, the Left debacle cannot be attributed to the end in Kerala.

It was Mamata's win that shocked and the guts she showed against the Left is praise-worthy. She managed to judge the popular resentment on the Left over their ignorance of industrial development and an overall Bengal situation ridden in debt.

With Left stalwarts like late Harkishen Singh Surjeet, late Jyoty Basu and Achuthanandan, a rare breed who walk and talk like a true Left supporter, the party has lost its charm and prominence over the years. The latest election results were the final nail in the coffin. Its high time that the Left reworked its strategies and looked at formulating people-centric policies.

If the Assembly Elections 2011 sounds the death knell for the Left, only remains to be seen.
