Cyber world lights up for Earth Hour on Mar 26
The Earth Hour was a resounding success the past years and with more and more people becoming aware of the catastrophic results of global warming, the occasion organized by the WWF gains further prominence.
The movement is making waves in the cyber world with people pledging to turn off the lights tomorrow said World Wild Life (WWF) Director General Jim Leape. He also added, “Around 2.25 percent tweets on social networking website Twitter and 880 searches per second on Google were about Earth Hour last year."
The effort will see lights being switched off across the world at 8:30pm on Mar 26 and can be easily be termed the biggest mobilisation drive against a cause. "It is much more than energy saving. It is about making a statement for the cause of earth," Leape commented.
The cause has found more supporters with the encouraging boost of celebrities to the cause. India joined the mass campaign only in 2009 and with more and more cities joining the cause, the exercise seem to be slowly attaining its objective.
Ravi Singh, secretary general and chief executive of WWF-India said, "There were more than 5,94,000 hits for Earth Hour after Bollywood actor Vidya Balan pledged to support the movement Tuesday. This year, around 50 cities, 11,957 educational institutions, corporates and many small NGOs have pledged to observe the Earth Hour."
The Earth Hour is expected to be a resounding success with the Environment Ministry secretary Dharmendra saying, “The government has appealed to over 2000 schools, 2000 Resident Welfare Associations, about 100 colleges, malls and hotels in the capital to switch off non-essential lights during the Earth Hour."
He also added that Delhi was able to save 300 MW of electricity during last years Earth Hour.
