New Delhi, Feb 9: Just how badly people in India wanted to switch mobile operators without changing their numbers can be gauged from the TRAI's statement on Feb 8 that said that nearly 1.71 million mobile users have already used the newly-launched but much delayed mobile number portability (MNP) scheme.

MNP which was first introduced in Haryana on Nov 25, 2010 and was later extended to all other circles on Jan 20, is a scheme wherein mobile users can change operators without letting go their old number.

Of all reasons attributed to change operators, call tariff is the most influential one. But surprisingly enough, there has been no major fall in call costs so far.

To avail the MNP scheme, customers need to send an SMS to 1900, who will then receive an unique porting code (UPC). Then, they have to visit the stores of the desired service provider, fill-up the form and after due verification the subscriber, shall within a maximum period of seven days, get back to the customer.

After rendering the number inactive for a few hours, the new operator shall send an SMS confirming the switchover.

The process will cost a maximum of Rs 19, to be collected by the new service provider.
