Psychic Paul's French successor introduced
The French successor, also named Paul, was brought into the aquarium at Oberhausen in western Germany from France.
He was lowered gently into his tank in a ceremony that was carried live on national television. During his first public appearance, the 10.5 ounce-octopus seemed shy as against his media-loving, attention-crazy predecessor.
"We got him from near Montpellier in southern France," an aquarium employee told an international news agency.
Seeking to keep the new and rather young cephalopod away from the media expectations on the soothsaying abilities which made Paul I world famous, the aquarium said, "No one yet knows whether Paul will be able to follow in his footsteps, or rather, his tentacle steps."
Paul I invited the world's interest and the global bookmakers' ire by accurately predicting the outcome eight successive games during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The oracle octopus passed away last week at the age of two due to natural causes.
