Chennai, Sep 8: After Australian authorities told its swimmers that they were free to fly back home if they felt unsafe after landing in India, the United States has now issued a special travel advisory cautioning its citizens on security concerns in Delhi just days ahead of the Commonwealth Games 2010.

US Mission in India has alerted Americans tavelling or residing in India to not only stay wary of terror threat during the Delhi Games but also to be alert on crime.

"The US Mission in India alerts US citizens traveling to or residing in India to safety and security issues related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in New Delhi, India, between October 3 and Oct 14, especially in light of the Worldwide Caution issued by the Department of State on Aug 12, regarding the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against US citizens and interests throughout the world," the latest advisory, which expires on Nov 15, 2010, said.

The United States does not have any specific information on any threat or planned attack, however, the citizens have been asked to keep themselves updated by visiting the Department of State website.

"Indian authorities will be responsible for security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games," the statement informed, advising its citizens to monitor local news reports and consider the level of security when visiting public places, religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants and recreation venues.

On crime, the statement said, "US citizens are advised to be on guard against petty crime, pickpockets, and the theft of personal property on trains or buses. Major airports, train stations, popular restaurants, and tourist sites are often used by scam artists looking to prey on visitors.

"Beware of touts who solicit travelers with "come-on" offers of cheap transportation, hotels, guided tours, or even commonwealth Game tickets. Tickets for Game events can only be purchased online, via phone, or at designated retail outlets."
