Chennai, Sep 7: MB Balakrishnan, the national swimming champ who was targeted in a brutal assault on Sunday, Sep 5, has been assured of action against the culprits.

Quoting the swimmer's father, Dr M B Badrinath, a newspaper report said that the Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister MK Stalin has assured the swimmer that the culprits behind the incident would be apprehended soon.

"The deputy CM enquired about his health and assured him that prompt action would be taken to bring the culprits to book," the swimmer's father, Dr M B Badrinath, is quoted as saying in Times of India.

The assurance from Stalin came when Balakrishnan, who was chosen for government assistance for winning medals in the South Asian Federation Games 2010, turned up with a bandaged head to receive a cash award from him.

Balakrishnan was attacked on Sep 5 morning by two yet-to-be-identified individuals. The duo beat up the Chennai athlete with cricket stumps when he was on his way to his daily routine practice session. The police has initiated investigation into the attack.

"Despite his injuries, he managed to go to the secretariat and meet the deputy CM. He is very courageous and will soon return to his routine training and be prepared for the competition," the father added.

The backstroke expert has broken national records and was a potential medal winner at the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi.
