Police kills key suspect in Gyaneshwari disaster

Jhargram, Aug 27: The key Maoist suspect in the Gyaneshwari Express train disaster has been killed by joint forces in West Bengal on Thursday, Aug 26.

The top Maoist leader, Umakanto Mahato, was killed in an overnight encounter at Mohanpur forest in Jhargram district of West Bengal. He was the leader of Maoist-backed People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA).

Mahato was in Central bureau of Investigation's wanted list in connection with the Gyaneshwari express disaster, which killed 71 passengers and injured 200 in May 2010 in West Bengal.

The CBI took over the Gyaneshwari express investigation from the state police on Jun 2010 and announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for information leading to the arrest of three prime accused.
