New Delhi, Aug 26: A slew of programmes have been planned worldwide to observe Mother Teresa's centenary on Thursday, Aug 26.

With its global headquarters located in the Indian city of Kolkata, the Missionaries of Charity marked the formal beginning of the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Mother Teresa.

Cardinal Telesphore Placidus Toppo of Ranchi attended the early morning mass at the chapel of Mother House as the main celebrant.

Archbishop of Kolkata Lucas Sirkar, Bishop of Baruipur Salvadore Lobo, and Archbishop Emeritus Henry D'Souza were the concelebrants of the mass.

In New Delhi, President Pratibha Patil will preside over a public ceremony honoring Mother Teresa between 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Besides this, leading publisher Amar Chitra Katha is set to release publishing a comic book about Mother Teresa.

While several events have been planned to celebrate Mother Teresa's 100th birthday across the globe, New York in United States will be the city decked the most with the colours of Missionaries of Charity.

The landmark Times Square will have marquees and hoardings up on Thursday, Aug 26 evening in white and blue. Named the Great White Way, bright neon lights will light up the city's celebrations.

However, the iconic Empire State Building has opted out of the citywide celebrations of the Mother's life.
