Nuclear Power
New Delhi, Aug 26: Among all the countries that are powered by Nuclear energy, India is the only one that holds the right of recourse against supplier in case of defect or fault in equipment or services, according to a research conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

The CII's research titled 'Comparison of Nuclear Liabilities between various countries' comes amid the cries of criticism that have arose against the government over the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill.

The Congress-led UPA government has been facing flak over the controversial bill as Opposition accused it of tailoring the policies to appease the United States.

While India is the only country among the likes of China, Canada, and even United States to have a provision to seek recourse against the supplier, on the negative side, the Asian giant has not prescribed any additional state compensation in the eventuality of an accident.

CII's Inter-country Comparison of Nuclear policies

The CII research shows that United States and Germany completely rule out additional state compensation while in countries like Japan and Republic of Korea the decision on the state compensation rests with the parliament.

However, India's the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, 2010, prescribes INR 1500 crore as operator"s insurance amount and upto INR 1500 crore as state guarantee or cover.

With the government keen on passing the bill, which is part of the Indo-US nuclear deal, before US President Barack Obama's visit, the bill is expected to be enacted soon.
