New Delhi, Aug 23: CPI(M) urged the all parties to protest against the government over the amendments in the nuclear liability bills, which would provide extra facilities to the suppliers only.

"It is not in national interest. The latest amendment goes against the recommendations of the Standing Committee of Parliament," said Party politburo member and Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat.

She also claimed that the new changes would help only the suppliers, which would effect the national interest.

"As far as national interest is concerned, we certainly request and think all parties should move against the amendments," Karat said.

According to the sources, one of the 18 amendments cleared by the Union Cabinet suggests that the operator can claim compensation from the suppliers only if an accident in a nuclear plant occurred 'intentionally'.

BJP also slammed the new amendments and said it would make it impossible to ascribe liability to suppliers of equipment to new atomic power plants.

"The formulation of 17 (b) proposed in the amendment is in fact worse than the provision contained in the original bill," discussed CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat with other leaders.
