Govt to introduce bill to hike MPs' salaries soon
“This has to be done through a legislation. A bill has to be brought to amend the Salaries And Allowances Of Member Of Parliament Act, 1954. We are trying bring the legislation in this session," Mukherjee said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Aug 17.
On the legislation, the minister said that it would “truly reflect" the suggestions made by the Joint Parliamentary Committee in this regard.
The minister's statement came after an uproar erupted over Union Cabinet"s move to defer the decision on the three-fold increment of the salaries of MPs.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav led the campaign demanding hike in MPs' salaries.
Seeking concrete assurance, Mr Yadav said, "We are ready. Bring the Bill tomorrow, we will pass it in two minutes."
The Members of the Parliament currently get paid Rs 16,000 per month.
