Leh: People battle for food supply
Leh, Aug 10: With continuous rescue efforts in the Leh cloudburst-hit region, now the Leh region is facing acute shortage of food, water and power on Tuesday, Aug 10.
The region remained cut off from the outside world for the fifth day as lifeline Leh-Srinagar and Leh-Manali roads continued to remain blocked.
Even the phones lines in the region were not restored. However, electricity was partially restored in Leh.
Officials and residents fear an outbreak of diseases, as mudslides have blocked the town"s natural water sources and piped supply. Most of the natural water sources in Leh have been contaminated due to mud, making it unfit for human consumption.
"We fear outbreak of waterborne diseases. Whatever water we"re getting is contaminated," said Leh-resident Chhering Tashi.
However, the Officials said they were airlifting 20,000 drinking water bottles to meet the requirements of flood-hit residents.
Drinking water is supplied through tankers also.
