Seep near BP oil well raises concerns
New Orleans, Jul 19: The seep which was detected around BP's oil well in Gulf of Mexico raises concerns about the working of the newly installed cap. This incited the US government to demand the company to intensely monitor their actions.
Thad Allen, Retired Coast Guard Admiral and the federal oil-spill response chief, declared the seep on Sunday, Jul 18 but he did not say what was coming from the seep. He also made the government's demands in a letter to BP. Allen gave the company until 9 pm (Eastern Time) to respond to them.
The pressure readings on the cap were not as high as expected. So the doubts are whether there is a leak elsewhere in the well-bore. If so the company will have to reopen the cap to prevent the environmental disaster from becoming worse and harder to fix.
Scientists could not confirm if the pressure readings mean a leak elsewhere in the well bore, possibly deep down in the bedrock which could make the seabed precarious.
