Suicide bombings rip through Pak shrine, 38 killed

Lahore, Jul 2: Terror continues to haunt Pakistan with double suicide bombing late on Thursday, Jul 1 claiming at least 38 lives and leaving over 135 wounded in Lahore.

The suicide attackers targeted a sufi shrine here at a time when thousands of worshippers gathered at the white marble mausoleum of 11th century saint Abul Hassan Ali Hajvery for the traditional Thursday prayers.

"There were two suicide bombings. We have found the severed heads of the attackers and the ball bearings used in the suicide vests," the city's civil administrator Khusro Parvez told media personnel.

The video footage of the blasts site showed the shrine, commonly known as Data Ganj Baksh, littered with bodies.

"The first bombing took place in the courtyard of the shrine. A few minutes later another suicide bomber blew himself up in the basement where people wash themselves before prayers," said city police chief Aslam Tareen, adding that 38 people are confirmed to have been killed in the terror strike, while over 175 people injured in the blasts have been admitted in various hospitals.
