Akhtar gets death threats for anti-Deoband remarks
Mumbai, May 15: Popular lyricist Javed Akhtar, who has angered conservative Muslim clerics with his liberal views, has reportedly received death threats.
The noted poet-lyricist has received death threats through SMSes and e-mails, say media reports. Akhtar is expected to speak to the Mumbai police commission on the matter on Saturday, May 15.
The death threats were fuelled Akhtar's statements against the recent fatwa against working women issued by Deoband seminary.
The
Darul
Uloom,
Deoband
decreed
that
working
women
should
cover
themselves
up
at
work
places
and
forbade
them
from
talking
to
male
colleagues.
Besides this, India's largest Sunni Muslim seminary also said that it was 'haram' (sin) for the family to receive money from a working woman.
The fatwa prompted critical reactions from several sections of the society including women activists and liberal thinkers.
In his response to the controversial fatwa, Akhtar had termed the decree 'insane'.
