New Delhi, May 1: Delhi University (DU), which is facing the heat for being responsible for the deadly radiation leak, has announced compensation for six people affected by the radioactive material sourced to it.

A university official on Friday, Apr 29 said that DU will also be providing a job to the dependents of the man who died due to the radioactive material found in the scrap market of Mayapuri in west Delhi.

"Rajendra Prasad's family will be getting Rs 8 lakh as compensation and his widow will be given a job in the university campus.

“Five victims who were exposed to the radioactive material and hospitalised will be given the compensation amount of Rs 2 lakh each," said university Registrar AK Sinha.

The radioactive Cobalt-60 which was found in scrap market was earlier this week traced to Delhi University Chemistry Department.

Taking serious note of this, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) slapped a show-cause notice on the university seeking an explanation as to why the safety rules were flouted.

DU has two weeks to respond to the notice.
