Canberra, Apr 22: Taking cues from the recent advisories issued by US and Canada, Australia has also warned its citizens to stay away from shopping areas and markets in New Delhi.

On Wednesday, Apr 22, US Embassy in New Delhi cautioned Americans to avoid places which are known to be visited by Americans and westerners on 'credible information' indicating that terrorists are planning to strike such areas in Delhi.

Canada also issued a similar advisory.

Australia's alert comes just months ahead of the Commonwealth Games. India hopes to be a safe host to thousands of athletes and their supporters set to land in the capital for the Oct 2010 sports event.

Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Thursday, Apr 22 'reviewed and reissued' its travel advisory to India in the wake of the terror threat.

"It contains new information under the Summary and Safety and Security: Terrorism (possible terrorist attacks against markets in New Delhi)," the update read.

"On 21 April the United States and Canada issued separate warnings about possible attacks against markets frequented by foreigners in New Delhi. According to these warnings, specific and credible information suggests that markets including Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Karol Bagh, Mehrauli, and Sarojini Nagar could be targeted by terrorists in the coming days or weeks. We strongly advise Australians to minimise their presence in market areas of New Delhi," the advisory added.
